When you consider how the compact and sporty SUV combines practicality and driving experience it’s easy to see why. Porsche’s 356, along with its A, B, and C variants, was in production from 1948 all the way through to 1965. These days it’s a highly sought after collector’s car, and you’re unlikely to see a cheap one on the market. Still, if you do get your hands on one, it’s an important piece of automotive history that could take almost any collection to the next level. But the idea really took off with the Porsche 924, a stripped-down sports coupe that the company produced between 1976 and 1988.

They were initially fitted with a 3.0-litre engine producing 260 PS (191 kW; 256 hp), and a four-speed manual transmission. Targa The 911 Targa is an open-roofed version of the 911, characterised by its distinctive roll-over protection bar and its fixed (rather than folding), removable roof section. The name comes from the legendary Targa Florio Sicilian road race and means ‘plate’ in English. Every Porsche model has an official name and an in-house type number. Theoretically, you should be able to pick any car from this list and find one for sale at a price point close to what we’ve suggested without too much effort. Keep in mind, however, that this is not a list of the best Porsches of money can buy, or even those that will necessarily give you the most bang for your buck — those are different discussions entirely. While it suffers from “not a 911” syndrome, the Porsche 944 has a lot going for it — the main plus point being it’s the last truly cheap Porsche out there these days. The sports coupes average around $26,000 — though if you’re ever going to find a post-pandemic Porsche hovering around the $5,000 mark, it’s probably one of these. There was a period when, in performance terms anyway, the 944 was arguably better than some of the 911s of its generation … In today’s market, the Porsche Boxster is still the only truly cheap Porsche out there; either new or used, it’s many people’s gateway into the German performance brand.

According to modern-day Porsche literature and websites (there is no period reference to SC meaning anything) the “SC” stands for “Super Carrera”. It featured a 3.0-litre aluminium engine with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and a 5-speed 915 transmission. Originally power output was 180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp), later 191 PS (140 kW; 188 hp) and then in 1981 it was increased to 204 PS (150 kW; 201 hp). The move to an aluminium engine was to regain case reliability, something missing for many years with magnesium.

Production and sales

Either way, the Macan is a very cheap and very practical Porsche, even if you decide to buy one brand new. Its appearance differs slightly from its sister-car, the 911 (997) Turbo, in a few ways. Older 911s are prone to rust in a few areas, and catching it before buying can save you from getting into a big headache with a considerable cost attached. While you might be more likely to find a Porsche owner in Teton County than in West Texas, access to the dealer is a serious consideration for anyone away from the city. Even in a place such as Kansas City, where the metro population exceeds 2 million, there is but one Porsche dealer. Unless you live in the affluent area of Overland Park, service for your new car may be a hassle. Porsche currently offers a 4-year warranty for up to 50,000 miles, which is generous considering the average warranty is three years and 36,000 miles.

Despite this, the annual cost of insuring new Porsche models is not much more than other high-performance cars that cost less. It debuted for the 2014 model year, and it remains Porsche’s best-selling model; in 2019, Porsche sold more Macans in the U.S. than the 911, 718, Panamera and Taycan combined. All Macans feature all-wheel drive and a seven-speed PDK automatic transmission.
